I tried

I finally made it to yoga class today. I tried to keep an open mind. I arrived ready to relax and have a good time and enjoy my fellow humans.

I realized halfway through the class that I was gritting my teeth and my cracked tailbone hates all the positions. I haven't grit (ground?) my teeth since the wedding.

Back to the drawing board.

Aw, too bad. I did my first home yoga tonight. It saves time and, eventually, money.

It might be worth trying again once your buttbone is healed. I actually enjoy yoga with the right instructor - I have a very low tolerance for Eastern woo-woo from extremely earnest white girls.

My tailbone will never heal. It's an 18 year old injury. It's why I have a recumbent bike.

Boo. No yoga for you then, sounds like.

That's too bad... did you tell the instructor about your tailbone? I have a student with a broken tailbone who has to avoid some of the poses. You could try a different type of yoga with a different instructor, but it may be that yoga is just not for you. At least you tried!

I'm not much good at yoga either. Tai Chi yes, yoga not so much.

There are so many flavors of yoga. Some prefer to use props, and some do not. The ones that use props (and have a blanket as one of the props) have you sitting on a folded up blanket if you cannot sit with your legs crossed comfortably without one.

Where you live, it is easier to find yoga that is not crappy. However, a lot of yoga instructors have found that they can make more money teaching weekend intensives to train other yoga instructors than they can teaching yoga so there are all of these crappy novice yoga instructors.

That said, since you can take a free yoga class with just about every yoga place on the planet, I had this plan that I was going to take a month of free yoga just by going to a new place every few days when I lived in Boulder. The first place that I took my husband to for free yoga turned him off to yoga forever. But I think he is turned off by most exercise things that involve instructors except aerial dance. He was annoyed that the lady at the yoga classes would just name the asanas without really explaining them and expect that people knew what to do.

And hey, aerial dance will definitely not hurt your tailbone, but you definitely will not be able to fully extend your arms after the first week. And your hands may blister until you develop proper callouses. I have wimpy soft hands that were prone to blistering.

She was talking about taking up pole dancing last night but I think we were both mostly asleep at that point.

Trapeze (http://www.trapezeschool.com/default.php) won't hurt the tailbone either—unless you fall (ouch!)
