My sister and I trying to go on a short trip May 11-14. All the cheap places to fly from Denver we cannot agree on.

LA? Went 2 years ago.
Austin? Roz: "Not Texas. No deserts. I am not going to the desert."
Roz wants Chicago. I think there's nothing in Chicago but food.
San Diego? Zoo. Maybe but expensive.

The east coast is an option, but again pricy flights.

We both want to check out Savannah. But the plane tickets are pricy.
Montreal? As much as it cost me to fly to Spain....

Roz also votes for Seattle/Portland. I tried to tell her that Austin is Portland only warm.

You should have seen the look I got when I said, "There's a bike path across Kansas!"

Ideas? Where are the super cheap flights?

I will want to be doing things there that my sister will not want to be doing.
But we've both been, and love it.

There's plenty to do in Chicago. Just off the top of my head, there's the Art Institue, one of the country's great art museums and schools. Since you mentioned zoos, I'll point out that the city has two zoos, the Brookfield Zoo (large, nationally-famous) and the Lincoln Park Zoo (kinda small, but not bad). There's also the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum (natural history).

Given a little time, I could think of more to do in Chicago; I lived there for six years.

And you may recall my various adventures with art museums in DC and NYC, so if you are willing to pay to go back east, you'll find plenty to see in both cities.

Not to mention the bike path along Lake Michigan, the incredible shopping, drinks at the Sears Tower (or whatever it's called now), the FOOD, the crazy hipster bookshops and cafes... Chicago is a lot of fun.

Roz looked up the Shedd Aquarium and saw that they have a special exhibit on jellyfish right now. Roz loves jellyfish like woah.
I guess we're going.
Next year though, I'm demanding Harry Potter in Orlando (who the hell else am I going to get to go on rides with me?!) and a road trip up the coast to Savannah.

I was going to do Portland/Seattle with a side trip to Cannon Beach this summer as I have several friends living in Portland right now, but I cxl'd to go down to New Orleans and Ormond Beach (FL) around Memorial Day to visit family, friends, and of course, the guy I seem to be fixed upon lately. The latter places, down South, are where I grew up, so they're not new, but I get homesick. All great choices. I've had fun trips to San Francisco (side trip to San Jose to see the Winchester house) and DC (for an Edvard Munch exhibit at the Nat'l Gallery). I lived down in Anaheim and did the San Diego Zoo and beaches. Savannah on a pass-through was lovely and I'd love to go back and stay a bit, eat and take the ghost tours. North Carolina and the Biltmore were awesome. I've always wanted to see Hearst Castle in Cali too... and drive down the coast. Salem at Halloween is another bucket list travel goal, and the cottages on the islands off the New England coast during summer. I though about Montreal for the Kinetik Fest in May, but yeah- the tickets were Europe-expensive! I love traveling, so any place sounds great to me!

They're like whiskey-ladden marshmallows. You just have to chase them and pounce on them -- like regular peeps only these ones are feisty and will attempt to drunkenly kick your ass first. The good news is that they won't win.

You can't like own an Irishman man...

You can devour them though, like the marshmallows they are!

I meant "peeps" like people. Next time I'm gonna havta shorten it to "ppl". Silly me. :P

Austin isn't really desert-like at all. It's warm and humid and has good food and fun stuff to see. Blind fold her and stick her on the Austin plane. It's worth it.

*I* want to go to Austin, and if they go, then [livejournal.com profile] manintheboat will never want to go again, so encourage her towards Chicago.

Tell ya what, if she does go to Austin and won't go back, I will happily go to Austin anytime. I <3 Austin and have some good friends out there ;)

Austin != desert.

Lived in Austin. Currently live in desert. No comparison possible. Especially at this time of year.

We decided on Chicago. Cheapest flights, no need for a rental car, and less temptation on my behalf to book us in a B&B (Roz says no B&Bs).

How are you?

Lots of fun stuff in Chicago too!

Doing well enough. Mostly nerd stuff. Programming. Working on M.Sci. Finally making music again. Marrying T. next October.

No longer feel like my life is heading towards a Room with a Moose, which is nice.
