I hate everything

except for tortellini.

Mom and I went dress shopping today. I think I hate bridal gowns.
The first store said we need an appointment.
The second store was consignment and was okay. I found a lovely gold sequin 1920s flapper gown. Except I'm an hourglass and there was no shaping it.
The third store was totally by the book low end catalog. Polyester. Beads. I said, "I'm looking for something wild and unusual." She handed me something off-white, "This is unusual."

We stopped in at MODA and found the perfect shirt for John. It's linen with gold brocade cuffs and collar. I'll have him go and try it on. The attendant was a sweet old Rastafarian man.

A linen-with-gold-brocade shirt would be stunning with the Blond Asian Girl dress. Not to mention showing off your figure.

I'm just sayin'.

I;m still leaning in that direction too....

*grin* Lean further.

Oo! I think you dropped something!

I REALLY hated dress shopping too. I went w/ my mom-in-law. We went to one place & i was done. That's why I had mine made. You're lucky to have your mom go w/ you tho.

Yeah, she's awesome.

Oooh 1920 flapper gown sounds absolutely lovely! Surely you could smash yourself into Spanx and be totally uncomfortable for a few hours. I kid, I kid... :)

[identity profile] manintheboat.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't the problem. It was too big with no waist! Flapper= no ass!

I'm gonna look like a Ren Fayre dropout.

YAAAAY!

[identity profile] manintheboat.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
IT'S A BUTTON DOWN DRESS SHIRT. IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE REN FAIR. AT ALL.

I'm glad you'll like it.

Have you tried places like Flossie's?

Yea bridal shopping is awful. If I had child-free time I would offer to go with you, but honestly the kids kinda suck at shopping so it'd be no fun with them there.

I was going to hit up Flossies tomorrow!

Yay Flossies :)

Re: ...but you have to go to the one in Seattle...

The $700- $1,200 price tags are still over budget.

okay, fine

okay, a friend of mine bought one of these
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_feature/NewArrivals/WeddingsandParties.jsp

but if you look on ebay there's a ton of silk jcrew wedding dresses on sale for $100-$300, many of them never worn.

This dress reminded me of you: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Asian-Japanese-silk-dress-/130532494075?pt=Vintage_Women_s_Clothing&hash=item1e6457cafb
If you don't like it you can use it as a pattern, or as wallpaper, or make fake flowers out of it.

To pay for your wedding dress I suggest giving lap dances.

Bridal shopping is awful. If you can have someone make your dress, do that. If you can't, go through the catalogs and see if there is anything you like. Call a shop that carries the line and see if they can get it for you. It takes about four to six months for a shop to get a dress.

Anything that is remotely unique or interesting will cost as much as a used car. I was ready to slap people when they said that Kate Middleton might change the trend against sleeves because most brides want sleeveless dresses. You can't get a dress with sleeves on the low end of the cost curve. Anything with sleeves is at least a thousand dollars.

Another option to the above is to go and look at a high end department store. Find a dress you like. This will cost less than a bridal gown.

I don't know about your area, but there were a lot of people trying to get rid of their old gowns on Craigslist here. If you could find something awesome that could be modified that would be neat. However, since people get their bridal gowns custom tailored, I think that most gowns would be useless.

Mom wants to make the dress but we have neither found patterns nor fabric I like.

I'll peek in on Craigslist! Thanks!

When is your date? I'm getting married in July... and I'm totally not into wedding planning.
