Aunt Vera
The Boulder County Mental Hospital called my father yesterday saying they picked up my Great Aunt Vera wandering the streets. Vera escaped from her Assisted Living Facility in Milwaukee, WI, took a cab to the airport, flew to Denver, took a cab to Boulder and was looking for my father. She is some flavor of actual crazy. The great apes of Siberia are holding her ancestors souls ransom and people are poisoning her.
Dad picked her up this morning. I met her at his house shortly after they arrived.
I'd never met her before. My dad's side is pretty strange anyway, and he'd not mentioned her ever until about 5 years ago.
She was very well dressed in a suit and put together. Outgoing, extroverted, engaging, affectionate, and very intelligent. When she was younger she owned multiple dry cleaners and liquor stores, personally employing 60 people, and making her wealthy. We walked through the garden and discussed plants, fashion and style, my father as a child, and her parents. She has perfect manners and speaks at least two languages. She and my father spoke Russian back and forth a bit (my grandfather spoke English, Russian, German and probably Ukrainian. My Father also speaks chunks of Spanish). She is spry and did not need help up the stairs or around the yard, but she let me hold her hand anyway.
My family kept their uncomfortable distance, talking to her like she was a child, and giving her a nervous laugh. I held her close, shared her sense of humor, and enjoyed being with her.
This is how I will probably be when I am old. I hope people are not scared of me.
