48) The I hate to cook book by Peg Bracken: 1960, 137 pgs
This book was referenced by another book I read. 180 quick and easy recipes.
The lack of fresh ingredients and veggies called for brings to light why things like Whole Foods happened.
Again, Cheeze in a can does not taste good.

49) Swedish Smorgas bord by Tore Wretman: 1964, 47 pgs
50 ways to cook dried, salted herring!

Have you ever read HUGE book that you really loved (750+ pgs)? Children's books don't count since they have HUGE fonts.
We were trying to figure some out last night and came up with nothing. Dahlgren: too long. Cryptonomicon: too long. The Bible: too long. You get fatigued around 600 pgs and nearly stop enjoying it.
Any John Crowley book is too long. ie Little Big. too long.
Kavalier and Clay is only 650, and not too long. Possibly too short even.
All Chuck Palahniuk books are too short. Ohh! You can pre-order the new book! Out in a few days!

I'm kind of a sucker for giant fantasy epics... Personal backbreaking favorites - A game of thrones (864 pages), Kushiel's dart (1000+ pages, although judicious editing would not have hurt in places), and the Stand (1168 pages). I kind of thought Dhalgren was too short - if you think about what happens in the book, not much really does... I wanted to know more, dammit!! I think about it periodically (for some reason usually while I'm running, I think because I wonder if I could make it in Bellona, and I doubt it) and it pisses me off that we know nothing at the end we didn't know at the beginning. blah. Cryptomonicon I totally agree with being too long, ugh, I read it in a one-night marathon and my brain hurt and I was sad at the end and it was 3 in the morning and I was totally paranoid.

Thinking about the books I love for your post makes me super happy summer is coming up... I have to figure out what I want to tackle now that school reading is almost done for a bit :)

I was gonna say The Stand too. I have a special place in my heart for End Of The World stories.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Long and wonderful, and I wished it never ended!

All three books of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle fit the bill... sorta. I say "sorta" because they're actually each three books bound into one, for a total of nine "books".

i loved all books in the clan of the cave bear series. but then i wanted to be an archeologist when i grew up so prehistoric life and the way they did things FASCINATES the hell out of me. all of those books are 600+ pages. I also love Anne Rice's Witching hour series, all rather large books too.

and my favorite book ever is the FOuntainhead, not sure how many pages but large!

OMG and i forgot The Stand. i love that one mostly because a secret place in my heart wishes 90% of the population would just die. I just wish it wasn't a random disease killing them, but judgement passed by myself and my friends who decided who lives or dies.
