When [livejournal.com profile] algol was here we went to H-Mart. They convinced me to buy this, even though there are ingredients in here that I don't eat. And we didn't use 4 onions. TWO POUNDS OF ONIONS. I only used 1/8th of 1 onion, I added extra potatoes instead.
We made 6 cups of rice.

I got Medium Hot. It's not hot at all. Barely warm.

Anyway, this is delicious and would eat it like twice a month if I could.
One problem I usually have is that if something says it serves 6 people I have to double it because [livejournal.com profile] randomdreams eats a lot. This would actually serve 6 people.

Intriguing stuff! I have a friend who grew up in Japan and who I convinced to cook food for me once a week for a while. She made one of the other varieties of Japanese curry and said that it's a comfort food for her. I get the impression that the Japanese don't expect hot-spice from their curries. I should make more Japanese curries, too.

I would eat it as a comfort food all the time if there wasn't soy in it.

Damn you, soy!

There are probably labor-intensive ways to make your own and then freeze a whole bunch. I have such a conflicted relationship with manufactured food products (it all takes so much time!). Sigh. Ah well. At least it sounds like it was tasty this time around, and hey, one less random thing in the pantry.

I only tried the Vermont curry brand once, back in my rebellious cooking phase. In Korea, and probably in Japan, there are rather strong family loyalties to certain block curry brands. My family's brand is Golden.I guess it is kind of like the family recipe for tuna casserole or something. It is comfort food that you just do not mess with.

We have had that particular curry before. Extra hot is best, although not for your vegetarian friends, unless they changed the recipe.

I think when we make Japanese curry, we add a type of hot sauce to it to bring out the heat. I am not sure what it is called, but we can get it at Curry House. It looks like red wine vinegar, but tastes like fire. I will ask next visit if you like.

This describes half of the stuff in our refrigerator.
[livejournal.com profile] manintheboat then mixes them together.
