Okay, maybe not the smelliest, but close.

[livejournal.com profile] skazat is a smelly man in general. He's been back from the Tour Divide for a month, and I'm still trying to de-stink the shorts he rode in on that ride. He took the first few stabs. Multiple rounds through the washing machine and oxyclean did most of the work. Then we hosed them off in Febreeze. We soaked them in soap and vinegar for a few hours, another round through the washing machine. Another round of Febreeze. A round of rubbing alcohol.
They are Febreezing in the sun right now.

The internet also suggests Pinesol, or hydrogen peroxide, or freezing....

Other ideas?

A soak in alcohol, followed by a 50/50 talcum powder + baking soda pack, will probably do quite a bit of good.

Washing methods for cloth diapers will probably do the trick. I've had good luck with baking soda in the wash cycle, vinegar in the rinse cycle, followed by an extra rinse. It also works for eliminating hard water buildup, and dissolves calcified deodorant pit stains off t-shirts like magic.

You bleach cloth diapers, you can't bleach spandex.

I'll try the baking soda though.

Sunshine.

Also, get a secondary pair on ebay.

This. And be thankful you weren't enclosed in a small room with them halfway through the Tour Divide.

Feel for his co-riders mom. She picked up TWO riders at the end and drove them back to Colorado in her car.

Put them in a bucket with a bunch of charcoal.
Leave them for three months.
Forget them and buy another pair when you can't remember where you put them.

How much does a pair cost? The cost of multiple trips through a washing machine by themselves, plus all the stuff you've put on them sounds pretty pricy, and it might be worth just giving in and buying a new pair.

Your determination is admirable.

I would have tossed them in the trash after the first day! :-)
