The neighbors back and across from us moved away on Saturday and LEFT THE DOG.
She been out there doing this mournful howl since. I'd rescue her myself but I want them to get a ticket. Animal control is on the way.

Apparently they can't even surrender her to a shelter...that's the least they could do. Poor pup..

If animal control is on the way, it'll go to the shelter. If it goes to the shelter, most likely it won't come out again (at least not outside of a bag). You may want to notify a local rescue group, so they can at least put a hold on it.

WTF. That happens all the time where I live - a lot of students have a cat or dog that they choose not to take with them when they depart and they just leave them behind. It boggles the mind.

This is how the North Shore Animal League (http://www.animalleague.org/) in Long Island got its start; back in the 20th century—it sounds so weird to say that—people would vacation in Long Island and they wanted to give their kids the "dog experience" without having a permanent dog, so they'd have the dog for the summer then abandon it at the end of the summer.

They likely told the kids that "someone would want him," because this attitude survives today. It's particularly bad in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, where there are no animal-rights laws and people are always turning dogs and cats loose in the street to fend for themselves.

That is so incredibly cruel. :(

Reminds me of the number of bunnies and baby chicks that are given to children at Easter, only to be chucked away soon after. It's not like the rabbits have laser beams and are able to fend for themselves against outdoor cats or other predators. Ugh.

Horrible people. Horrible, horrible people.

True story: in college, a bunch of us went to look at an apartment (upper half of a duplex). The family had a really super adorable kitten that we squeed over, and also had a "den" set up on their back porch for a stray they were feeding.

Two weeks later, we were moving into the apartment in the middle of an icy March rain. Next door is a squalling kitten on top of a little garden shed, getting slowly soaked. We realized it was the same kitten we saw on our visit and snatched her up, dried her off, put her in the bathroom away from my cat until we could get her to a vet... whereupon we found out she had contracted FLV, almost certainly from one of the many neighborhood strays, since she apparently hadn't been fixed or vaccinated.

We had her for a year, until she died a truly heartbreaking death from the leukemia that took her from a perfectly healthy young cat to death's door in under a week.

But that's not the best part. When we found the kitten? We also spotted the stray cat's "den" wadded up in the trash. We found him huddled under a bush in the yard. We couldn't integrate a third cat into the household so we took him to the shelter where at least if he were euthanized, he wouldn't starve or freeze.

That's not the best part either. The family that moved? We learned from the landlord (when we asked him to contact them to find out if the kitten had escaped during their move and was "lost") that they bought their own place. So they didn't dump the cats because they were prevented from bringing them along. They were just cretinous assholes. May they rot in hell.

People are horrible

Oh....
When we moved in here the previous owners left 3 cats. Our neighbor said he would take care* of them.

*I'm pretty sure he drowned them.

Can we not take away their license to breed? Or breathe? Or be within 30 feet of an animal?

Seconded.

Now I'm sitting at my desk, very angry. I work for the court system and am always infuriated and greatly saddened when I read not only about animal abuse/cruelty cases, but also what people are capable of doing to their own children in terms of abuse and neglect. If you don't have it in you to respect or protect another life, no matter how small, maybe you should not be a pet owner or a parent.

What?! That is terrible. I hope that they get nailed with a HUGE fine and that the poor dog goes to a rescue. If it's a big dog I know people?

I often wish we could spay or neuter people with such obvious deficiencies of compassion and personal responsibility. Well, hopefully they'll at least get a ticket, and hopefully the dog will find a better home. *sigh*
