I liked Chelsea M. Campbell's The Rise of Renegade X pretty well and I LOVED the sequel, The Trials of Renegade X which I just read. But only if you are in the mood for snarky-sullen-yet-ultimately-good-hearted-and-heroic YA. (But the snarky and sullen? IS HILARIOUS)

Alan Turing - Enigma (it's really long) or 'The Idea Factory': How Bell Labs invented the future.

I enjoyed The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. It's beautifully written, but the premise does require some suspension of disbelief.
